Want to talk about vidya, or stuff loosely related to vidya? This is your place. Global rules are still in full effect, and shitposting/nsfw content is allowed, just make sure it's related to video games in some way.

I've just recently been introduced to emulation, although only surface level. Was wondering if there's any tips or basic run throughs that would be helpful. My goal is to try it out on Animal Crossing New leaf before buying a steam deck basically.

Depending on what you're emulating, it can be either really simple or a bit of a pain in the ass. Your best bet would be to look at the emulator websites or emulator wikis. They'll usually give you an idea of what they have working so far or what the best settings for specific games are.

Since AC is a first party title, odds are it'll work well enough though.

There's an empty Animal Crossing imageboard at canberrachan.org.

It's pretty cool I guess. I just wish they didn't fuck too much with the difficulty of the gym leaders and stuff. It'd have been neat if they gave more of an incentive to trade or do battles with random players you come across. It's neat to have other people running around, but eh, most of them don't interact with others.

Yknow I hate MMOs, but for some reason Ragnarok Online has roped me in.
Is there any way to escape before it's too late, or will I be stuck grinding my life away on this game for the next decade and a half like everyone else who started playing?

 No.124

You'll come to hate it once you realise how tedious and grindy it gets, as well as the lack of periodic expansions that keep corpses like WoW shambling along.
Sadly, it is not the early 2000s anymore and the social aspects of most MMORPGs is dead in the dust, you'd be lucky to find a lively guild that's regularly active. Nonetheless, the world and storyline are vast enough to take a solid while to fully appreciate every facet they have to offer.
Enjoy your journey and nevermind the destination, and for the sake of all that is holy try not to rely on online resources.

What (private) server are you playing on?

>You'll come to hate it once you realise how tedious and grindy it gets, as well as the lack of periodic expansions that keep corpses like WoW shambling along.

That's precisely why I hate MMOs. They're too grindy for my tastes, but for some reason I enjoy it here. I genuinely couldn't tell you why. Maybe it's the environments? Enemy variety? Music? Who knows, I certainly can't pinpoint it.

>Sadly, it is not the early 2000s anymore and the social aspects of most MMORPGs is dead in the dust

I never got to experience that firsthand, even when I played Runescape back in 2006 I never really interacted with other players except to trade. A couple of my IRL friends have expressed interest in playing with me though, so I'll have to see how that pans out.

>and for the sake of all that is holy try not to rely on online resources.

Why's that? I haven't really used anything online since NovaRO offers commands like @whodrops [item] and @whereis [monster].

>What (private) server are you playing on?

I inadvertantly answered this, but I'm playing on NovaRO for now. I was going to do Shining Moon since it's pre-renewal, but it's very group-oriented and I'm too shy to ask other players in game to do stuff with me.

I hate myself for turning this into a rant, please do forgive.

Playing with friends sounds splendid; the more, the merrier. It used to be the case that one could make a few solid friends over the years by playing random MMOs but now folk are less willing to go try something out on their own unless their pals are already there, or they can coerce them to join in.
My comment regarding online resources was in an effort to emulate the good old '00s lack of comprehensive encyclopaedias, to get you to ask and explore, but it would seem that you're not too fond of the latter and the former has been resolved with servers implementing in-game itemid and monsterid search features.

As for the grind, it gets progressively worse until you reach the final stages of the game and begin collecting specialised resources/equipment for PvP, WoE, etc.. Don't get me wrong, behind all of that grind lies a terrific game with great mechanics and it tries its best to sprinkle novelty and charm all over to stop you from noticing the grindy aspects.

Now excuse me while I go get buzzed on some crack cocaine so I don't relapse on my RO addiction.

Nah you're fine, I enjoy reading and responding to long posts.

Yknow you actually raise a really good point there. I had a really tough time soloing a level 80 instance even though I was base level 102.
I'm planning to do Old Glast Heim eventually and at the moment there's no fucking way I'll be able to even get halfway through unless I reach the max base level and overstock on consumables.
Maybe I'll toughen up and ask folks around the game for help rather than relying on other people I already know. NovaRO has a surprisingly nice community, no doubt some friends could be made there.

>As for the grind, it gets progressively worse until you reach the final stages of the game and begin collecting specialised resources/equipment for PvP, WoE, etc.

Yeah I'm sorta noticing that right now. As great as Gunslinger/Rebellion is for newbies like me, the equipment is quite expensive for someone who hasn't fully figured out how to work the merchant class, and the hat quests take so many drops to complete.

>My comment regarding online resources was in an effort to emulate the good old '00s lack of comprehensive encyclopaedias

Exploring and figuring stuff out by oneself is pretty cool actually. I played Morrowind without a wiki or build guide, all I knew was the intelligence potion exploit and how to use the journal. Playing an RPG without looking everything up feels pretty nice, I'm not sure I can explain why I feel that way.

Varrock can be entered through the north gate from the Wilderness, through the east gate, through the south gate from Lumbridge, and through the west gate from Barbarian Village. Each entrance has level 21 guards surrounding it.

This doesn't seem right. Are you sure that's how you get there?

I had pic related once. It was pretty fun. You put your smartphone in there and play games on the oculus store. I only reccomend it if you want to test how it is to play in VR, beacuse your battery gets really hot and low after some time.

Also, Darkrai is my favorite pokemon by far. I remember opening a booster card pack back when I was in elementary school and getting a Darkrai card, it was awesome. I later managed to get a Shaymin card from one of those huge tins as well.
The interesting thing is, I never really played TCG, I just liked to open the card packs and see what was inside. It wasn't until late middle school - early high school that I actually tried playing it and found that it wasn't as fun as Yugioh, which is what I had moved onto at the time.

Yeah, I get that. I remember trying to go to the bookstore downtown and there was a pokemon go event going on. The entire place was packed, way more than usual. I gotta wonder what caused that game to die off so quickly, there's really no way it can be attributed to bad updates alone

I remember playing Pokemon Go while driving since it first came out a few months after I got my license. Good god was I an idiot.
